Teeth important when dating ,survey says

When it comes to finding that perfect someone in the United States, people going out on dates are into nice teeth, well-groomed hair and perfect grammar over all the fancy clothes, fit bodies and flashy cars.

According to an annual survey conducted by the mega-dating site Match.com, sultry singles seem to hone in on how well someone speaks, and what his or her pearly whites look like, when meeting someone for the first time for romance.

The survey, called “Singles in America,” collected data from over 5,481 singles and more than 1,000 married couples, asking them a range of questions about their dating experiences, preferences and adventures.

The subjects of the study were not Match.com members, according to the site’s blog, but instead were men and women from the age of 21 and over from all around the country.

MarketTools spearheaded the findings, in association with biological anthropologist Dr. Helen Fisher and evolutionary biologist Dr. Justin R. Garcia of The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University.

“Whether they research potential dates on Facebook; if they ‘hook up’ with co-workers; how many times they have fallen in love; what they ‘must have’ in a long term partner—we asked them just about everything,” according to dating website.

The results of the third-annual 2012 survey were posted on Match.com’s blog this week, and highlighted some other interesting tidbits—besides teeth preferences and the importance of speech—which were telling of America’s dating singles.

The survey largely focused on the impact social media and online dating services have had on atypical meet-ups and budding love interests.

“A historically unprecedented number of single Americans are now turning to the Internet to find love,” the survey said. “Nearly one-third of singles reported that they have dated someone whom they met online.”

With the days of meeting singles through mutual friends or at a bar falling behind digital dating services and immediate Internet access, the “Singles in America” study showed that 49% of women, and 27% of men, said they would cancel a first date based on information uncovered during a quick Google or Facebook scan.

Because of that, a solid portion of daters also admitted that they clean up their personal pages before welcoming a friend request from a potential suitor.

Since most peoples’ phones are attached to their hands, the study also asked how singles would react to a date sharing “sexts” that were sent to them.

Unsurprisingly, nearly half of the men asked said they wouldn’t mind, whereas only 13 percent of women said they were OK with it.

Collectively, nearly a quarter of those surveyed admitted to sharing a sexy photo sent from another person.

Sticking to the technology theme, the study unveiled that over 90 % of singles also agreed turning to your smartphone, and sending a text message to end a relationship, is not proper etiquette.

“Sexting, new attitudes about virginity, the rise of ‘friends with benefits,’ emerging ‘Internet etiquette’ and women’s rising roles in courtship all presage a dramatically new dating landscape,” Fisher said about the extensive survey results.

Here are some other key findings from this year’s survey:

Men judge women most on:

Teeth (58%)

Grammar (55%)

Hair (51%)

Women judge men most on:

Teeth (71%)

Grammar (69%)

Hair (53%)

It enriches those whoreceive, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and none is so poor but that he can be made rich by it. A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and is nature’s best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.
– Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch

Orthodontics is a great way to give people with crooked teeth a perfect smile.

We generally prefer to move teeth when the bone is not fully mature, as it is softer that that of an adult. Usually the ideal age is just when the baby teeth have fallen out. Somewhere between 11-14 years old.

Interceptive Orthodontics

There are certain cases where interceptive orthodontics can be done at an early age in order to prevent problems later. Oral habits like thumb sucking cause the teeth to protrude. Stopping the habit is a sort of interception that might use an orthodontic appliance. Another example is if a baby tooth is lost early and the space where it was is not held open. Then the drifting teeth might prevent the permanent tooth from coming down into place. In these cases, a space maintainer is the solution, as it holds the space open till the adult tooth comes in.

Sometimes, the upper teeth erupt into a position that is inside the lower teeth. A normal esthetic bite is such that the upper teeth are outside of the lower teeth. By placing a simple appliance in the child’s mouth, we can easily guide the permanent tooth into place.

Adolescent Orthodontics

The most common orthodontics is that done to an adolescent. The teeth have just come in, the body is still growing and we can easily move them to where we want them. While it may look simple there are many factors an orthodontist takes into account while he is planning the treatment. The Dr. must evaluate the skeletal pattern of the child and the estimated growth that will happen later on. Specialized x-rays called a cephalometric and a panoramic x-ray are needed for this. Digital x-rays greatly reduce exposure to radiation.

Cephalometric X-ray

Panoramic X-ray

Computerized orthodontics or brackets?

Once the plan has been made there are two basic approaches to treatment. The standard was always using brackets to hold a wire which imparts the gentle forces on the teeth. Ultimately a rectangular wire fits in a slot in the bracket and the teeth move into a very precise location as well as being tilted in the ideal direction.

In recent years, a new approach is used where a computer calculates all of the steps needed to get from the beginning to the end. Clear plastic is molded into a form which fits on the teeth with slight pressure. That pressure causes slight movement. After two weeks or so another plastic form is placed on the teeth causing a bit more movement. After 12-24 months or so, the teeth have moved into the desired location due to orthodontics without wearing any unsightly brackets.

Broken Teeth

All too often we are not careful about how we take care of our teeth. There are many ways which we can cause broken teeth and fractured teeth. Being careful of some basic behaviors can save us lots of pain and suffering later on.

Bad Habits

Many people have developed oral habits that can cause broken teeth. For example, chewing on hard items like pencils do great damage. Since these behaviors are unconscious much of the time, they go on for extended periods of time. Biting like this will cause micro fractures that can damage the enamel making it more susceptible to breaking. Some people eat things like sun flour seed and always break them with one of their front teeth. Over the years that can cause an unsightly groove in the tooth.

Another prime source of broken teeth is chewing on ice. While it might be fun, the hard ice itself can break a tooth. But less well known is the fact that the freezing ice causes an internal stress in the tooth itself which can weaken the tooth by creating microscopic internal fractures.

Sports And Tooth Danger

Of course contact Sports are a constant concern for teeth. We all know of the hockey players missing their front tooth, but damage can happen when you least expect it. So many times as the summer arrives, I have patients who dived off the diving board into the pool and did not realize that they were headed right for the floor of the pool. They hit their tooth on the floor and it breaks. Bike riding is another prime source for tooth damage. See this picture of a child who broke their front teeth. There is a characteristic breakage pattern of an angled break. One way to prevent these concerns is to have a child wear a sports guard when they are involved in an activity that can hurt their teeth.

Emax cad porcelain

Emax cad porcelain is a new materiel being used to make dental crowns. It has numerous advantages over standard porcelain. The Cad in Emax cad porcelain stands for computer aided design , being used by the CEREC SYSTEM that allows for the manufacture of a CEREC crown in the dental office in an hour.

Emax cad porcelain is a material called lithium disilicate. It is exceptionally natural in its appearance and is hard to differentiate from natural teeth. But the greatness of this porcelain material is not in its beautiful esthetics, but rather in its strength.

Porcelain strength

In general, dental porcelain is a strong materiel. It has great strength under compression. Imagine putting a piece of glass on a perfectly flat surface with 1 drop of water under it. Drive a car over it and it won’t break but put one grain of sand under and it will. It has poor resistance to lateral forces or flexural strength. Porcelain strength is measured in MPaS or megapascals. Regular porcelain has something like 150 MPa’s but Emax cad porcelain is in the order of 400MPA’s. More than 2 times as strong as a regular porcelain crown with esthetic advantages.

When we make a CEREC Emax cad porcelain crown, it comes in a block that is not fully formed and once the crown is manufactured, it needs to be fired in a porcelain oven to be completed and brought to strength. It is quite fascinating as the materiel has a blue color until it is removed from the oven when it takes it’s final beautiful shape and hue.

Depending on the situation, we use this material for many of our crown solutions. The translucency, opalescence, and light diffusion properties of IPS e.max lithium disilicate were all designed to copy natural tooth for beauty and quality restorations.

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain has the unique ability to mimic natural teeth. They are a bunch of different types of Porcelain Crowns and each has its own advantages.

Traditional feldspathic Porcelain Crowns

These are a glass ceramic that achieves a high degree of aesthetic result, can work for decades. It is usually applied by hand using a porcelain powder. The technician builds up the crown using a paintbrush and is able to layer different subtle shades into the crown. It is used as a veneering structure on porcelain fused to metal crown (PFM).

different types of Porcelain Crowns

Glass ceramics with fillers

These different types of crowns are very ethic as well and much stronger and fracture resistant that a regular glass ceramic crown. They are also suitable for CAD-CAM systems allowing the dentist to scan the tooth in the mouth and create the crown digitally and then have the machine mill the crown out. One type of porcelain is E-max cad. It is Lithium dislocate materiel that comes in blocks. They are blue in color since they have yet to polymerize completely. Once the crown is prepared, the crown goes into a porcelain oven and we glaze it to make it shiny and we can give it some color to mimic natural tooth shades. It is really quite an amazing materiel. It then gets bonded onto the tooth with composite cement.

Glass-Free Ceramics, Polycrystalline

These are materials with alumina and zirconia. Porcelain crowns made out of these materials are very hard and durable. They are almost impossible to break and might be a good choice for people that grind their teeth. The one problem with them is that they are not so aesthetic and ignored to use them a layer of porcelain needs to fused onto the outside of the zirconia.

Color in Dentistry

We use color in dentistry everyday as we do esthetic white fillings as well as in crown and bridge. Color in Dentistry is critical to get a single crown to match natural teeth and in order to do that we need to understand some basic color concepts to apply them to Color in Dentistry.

Colour as we know it is subjective. our eyes see a certain electromagnetic wavelength of light energy. Our eyes do not tell us what color each wavelength is, rather that information is sent to our brain and it is the brain that tells us what color ie. wavelength we are seeing.

Coloris composed of 3 components. Hue, chorma and value. Hus is what we commonly call a color. For example, blue, orange green. Chroma is the intensity or richness of that color. It is what we might refer to when saying a color is intense or dull. Value is how light or darkness affects our perception of the color. SO any particular wavelength can have many different shades of perception depending on how much light there is. Color theory as it is called is explained in a 3d color wheel diagram.

In addition, teeth have other characteristics that flat color does not. Teeth have translucency, opalescence and fluorescence. That is they have a glow to them. When we are trying to recreate a tooth in the dental lab we need to use all of these different components to make the crown fit seamlessly.

Adding to the mix of complexity is the external light source we view the teeth with. Natural light will give us the perception of one color. However, If you view the teeth with flourescent lights, we will percieve another color.

All in all Color in Dentistry is a complicated science, that must be understood to achieve the beautiful results we are able to get with today’ s modern materials.

Laser Esthetic Gum Recontouring

Is the reshaping of your gum right for you?

Having a beautiful smile is important not only for aesthetic reasons, but because it also raises self-esteem, improves confidence, and benefits a person’s mental health. People born with uneven gums, however, find it more difficult to develop the confidence to smile. Laser Esthetic Gum Recontouring can solve this problem.

But there’s no need to live with the smile you have. A straight, attractive gum line plays a significant role in that smile, and you can benefit from the right cosmetic dentistry treatment. Fortunately, modern dental technology offers a wide range of possible treatments to improve both your appearance and your health, with your surgical experience completely pain and worry free. If you have previously been cautious of any kind of gum contouring procedure, consider how using Laser Esthetic Gum Recontouring can help you.

Patients who wish to reshape their gum line or remove a portion of gum tissue can often benefit from contouring with little risk and few side effects. Laser Esthetic Gum Recontouring is used to alter the edge of a gum line, reshaping it to improve the aesthetics of one’s smile. When the gums are too high, too low, or simply uneven, they can make a smile appear unbalanced, as if the teeth or lips are also too high or low. However, a simple contouring procedure can bring a more natural and attractive look to one’s mouth, with nearly no risk to patients.

Because the effects are permanent, it’s also important to have accurate expectations for your results. Dr. Greenspan can help you decide whether gum reshaping is right for you, and can show you what your gums will look like after contouring, a visual representation of your projected results.

His use of laser in esthetic gum recontouring allows for an easier and more comfortable gum contouring than ever before, with increased benefits over the use of a traditional scalpel. These include greater surgical accuracy, a more even gum line, less discomfort, less bleeding during the procedure, less bleeding and discomfort during recovery, and a quicker recovery.

Porcelain is the cornerstone of dental esthetic treatment today and there are many different types of materials. Dental Porcelains and the aesthetic balance is how we determine what is the best material to use for any given procedure. Porcelains are a type of ceramic materiel that replicates tooth structure for function and also looks natural.

Dental Porcelains and the aesthetic balance

There are 3 basic types of porcelain that we use:

Glass based porcelain with filler for strength, also known as feldspathic porcelain

Leucite reinforced porcelain or lithium disilicate reinforced porcelain – Emax

Polycrystaline materials like Zirconia

The differences between them are what we refer to in Dental Porcelains and the aesthetic balance. Glass based porcelains are translucent, relfect light similarly to natural tooth structure but are comparatively weak. Because they are translucent, mimicking tooth structure, they also are effected by the color of the tooth below. This is a problem if the tooth is dark as the final restoration will be dark

Leucite reinforced porcelains or particularly lithium disilicate porcelains (Emax) have become popular recently. Almost 3 times as hard as traditional

porcelains they have the advantage of beauty and they also can be etched on the inside with acid, in order to improve the retention of the cement.

Finally, is Zirconia. It is an extremely hard polycrystaline solid stabilized with alumina. It is very rigid and can be used for long span bridges but it is brittle and not too translucent making it the least esthetic of the options. Because there is no glass content in zirconia, acid etching does not selectively remove glass microscopically making the mechanical microscopic retention in other porcelains not efficient. However, the ability to stain and glaze to mimic natural tooth makes this material a great option whereDental Porcelains and the aesthetic balance are being contemplate.
